A Mechanically Reliable Transparent Antifogging Coating on Polymeric Lenses

Polymeric lenses have been increasingly used to replace glass due advantages of light weight, high refractive index, and ease making into complicated shapes. However, a severe constraint their wider application lies with intrinsic weakness in hardness that can lead mechanical damages by abrasion. During service, fogging remains another unsolved challenge optical lenses, which may significantly reduce the users’ visibility or even cause accident. Therefore, it is imperative develop mechanically reliable transparent antifogging coating on polymeric lenses. In this work, two-step protocol developed comprising room-temperature oxygen plasma treatment polymer substrate followed silica thin film deposition using pulsed laser (PLD). The modifies surface chemistry allow strong adhesion between coating. Due porous nature PLD deposited nanosilica film, also displays an antireflection effect. This highly superhydrophilic opens great opportunity for eyewear precision optics industries.
